Kartigei Deepam this year was on 8th December 2011. It will be celebrated for three day but this year since the 3rd day was Lunar Eclipse , so I lit the lamp only for 2 days.
Hindu believe that Eclipse is not a good phenomena. Scientifically during eclipse, harsh rays will be emitted by Sun and Moon. The rays are not good for Human so Indians always stay in the house during the eclipse to avoid / minimize the radiation. Scientific research has revealed that eclipses emit harmful radiation: infra-red rays damage the retina of the eyes, contaminate food and water and impacts the foetus of pregnant women.
Anyway talking about Kartigei, i have wrote before why Kartigei is celebrated by Hindus. This year I lit up 13 lamps at my home. It look so vibrant at night!
